On Monday 8th September, the VOR team traded desks and design packs for steel mesh, rocks, and fencing as we took part in our annual company-wide volunteering day. This year, we joined forces with Greenways and Cycleroutes, a volunteer-led charity that builds and maintains walking and cycling routes across the region.
The day formed part of Greenways’ ninth annual workcamp, and their third in Shepton Mallet. Our team supported a new route currently being built Northwest from Hamwood Viaduct towards Bath.
Our task was to build gabions and fencing along a section of pathway, creating a safe edge so that walkers and cyclists can pass confidently over a steep drop. It was back-breaking work, but thanks to sheer determination (and a lot of teamwork), we completed every single gabion by the end of the day, a real credit to the team’s effort and spirit.
At VOR, we believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work. Our company-wide volunteering day is one way we do this, but each member of our team also has a personal volunteering day each year to support a cause close to their heart. Together, these initiatives reflect our commitment to community, sustainability, and social value beyond our retrofit projects.
A huge thank you to Greenways and Cycleroutes for welcoming us to their camp at Rock Farm in Shepton Mallet and for the opportunity to contribute to such a worthwhile and lasting project. We’re proud to have played our part in improving access to these routes, helping more people travel safely and sustainably for years to come.
